This article examines the potential use of the European Digital Identity Framework established by eIDAS 2.0 in the digital transformation of European civil aviation. The objective is to assess how the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), electronic attestations of attributes and qualified trust services can support passenger identification, digital aviation documentation and secure data exchange while remaining interoperable with aviation-specific regulatory frameworks. The study uses a qualitative, exploratory and analytical design based on critical literature review and legal-institutional analysis of European Union legislation, ICAO standards and guidance, EASA documentation, SESAR strategic materials and selected implementation cases, including Digital Travel Credential (DTC), continuing-airworthiness documentation and the Amadeus–Lufthansa pilot. The results indicate three principal application areas: passenger travel and border-processing workflows based on DTC and EUDI Wallet; electronic trust services for technical, administrative and continuing-airworthiness records; and interoperable passenger-processing services based on verified digital attributes. The findings also show that operational benefits depend on regulatory interoperability, privacy by design, cybersecurity, data minimisation, accessibility and the preservation of alternative service channels. The study concludes that eIDAS 2.0 can serve as a horizontal trust infrastructure for European civil aviation, but its effective sectoral use requires alignment with ICAO and EASA standards and proportionate governance of identity, biometric and credential data.
