Eton taps China's Auson gel timolol for infantial hemangiomas

Illinois-based Eton Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ETON) has licensed US rights to ASN-001, a topical timolol gel for proliferating superficial infantile hemangiomas, from Shanghai-based biotech Auson Pharmaceuticals. Financial terms were not disclosed. Eton said the transaction is expected to be accretive to 2026 earnings and will be financed from existing cash.

ASN-001 targets a patient segment that currently has no FDA-approved topical option. Physicians routinely prescribe ophthalmic timolol products off-label for moderate infantile hemangiomas — a practice Eton estimates covers more than 10,000 patients annually in the US. The company puts the total addressable population for an approved topical product at 20,000 to 30,000 patients per year, roughly two to three times the population served by systemic therapy.

Auson previously completed a three-arm Phase II/III trial in 168 patients. At week 24, 56% of patients applying ASN-001 twice daily and 42% applying it three times daily showed elimination or near-elimination of their hemangiomas, compared with 15% in the placebo group. Eton will conduct a bioavailability bridging study, with an NDA submission planned for the second half of 2027 and a potential approval and launch in 2028. ASN-001 carries patent protection through 2044.

The deal is Eton's second infantile hemangioma asset in six months. In March 2026, Eton acquired US commercialization rights to Hemangeol (propranolol hydrochloride) oral solution from Pierre Fabre Medicament for USD 14 million upfront plus an 8% royalty on net sales — a marketed orphan drug for proliferating infantile hemangiomas requiring systemic therapy. Eton relaunched Hemangeol on May 1, 2026 with its Eton Cares patient support program and exclusive specialty pharmacy distribution. ASN-001 is described by the company as designed for the moderate, superficial segment of the disease spectrum that does not require systemic treatment, making the two assets non-overlapping in their intended patient populations.

Eton has now executed at least five US-rights acquisitions or licenses since January 2025, each structured as a US-only license with the originator retaining all ex-US rights. Meanwhile., Auson retains all rights outside the US to ASN-001.
