CSPC and AstraZeneca establish biologics manufacturing joint venture in China
CSPC Pharmaceutical Group (HKEX: 01093) and AstraZeneca will establish a biologics manufacturing joint venture in China, expanding a partnership that has already generated more than USD 20 billion in potential deal value across multiple licensing agreements this year. According to a CSPC announcement, the two firms have signed a JV contract to construct and operate a new-generation biologics manufacturing facility in Shijiazhuang, China.
CSPC will hold a 51% equity stake and contribute its AI-driven current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) system and facility construction expertise; AstraZeneca will hold 49% and contribute global quality standards oversight and supply chain management capabilities. The JV's initial scope covers the manufacture and supply of mutually agreed biologics drug substances for global markets, with both parties retaining the option to incorporate additional products as capacity scales. No specific biologic programs or drug candidates are named in the agreement.
The facility is described as a next-generation biologics drug substance manufacturing platform combining CSPC's automated, intelligent, and lean manufacturing systems with AstraZeneca's global quality framework. CSPC's manufacturing contribution is characterized by the company as an AI-integrated cGMP operating model applied to biologics upstream and downstream processing. The JV contract remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. No financial terms were disclosed.
AstraZeneca and CSPC have deepened their mutual links this year. In January 2026, CSPC and AstraZeneca signed a strategic collaboration and license agreement covering eight long-acting peptide programs, with AstraZeneca paying a USD 1.2 billion upfront fee and up to USD 18.5 billion in total potential value. In July 2026, the two parties entered a collaboration, option and license agreement for siRNA drug candidates targeting renal disease, carrying a USD 30 million upfront payment and up to USD 1.77 billion in total potential value. On the same day as the manufacturing joint venture announcement, CSPC separately disclosed receipt of a USD 10 million milestone payment from AstraZeneca under the June 2025 strategic research collaboration agreement for novel oral small molecule candidates, following exercise of a license option on one preclinical candidate program.
