A portable system for determining dilation of a cervical opening is disclosed. The system includes a probe portion configured for insertion into a vaginal canal, at least one illumination source configured to emit patterned light into a field of view, and an image sensor configured to capture image data including the patterned light as reflected from tissue within the vaginal canal. A processor receives the image data and analyzes spatial characteristics of the patterned light to determine information corresponding to dilation of the cervical opening. In certain embodiments, the processor determines depth information based on geometric relationships between the illumination source and the image sensor and calculates dilation based on the determined spatial information. The system may further include a display and/or a communication module for presenting the dilation measurement and a graphical representation to a user.
