Abstract

An aircraft can include a boom, a propulsion system coupled to a first end of the boom via a stanchion, and a first wing coupled to a second end of the boom. The propulsion system can include rotor blades configured to rotate about a propulsion system longitudinal axis, stator vanes, and turbine blades disposed at an exit of the propulsion system. The turbine blades can be coupled to, and configured to rotate with, the stanchion. Each turbine blade can be configured to rotate about an axis through a length thereof for diverting an air flow through the propulsion system to thereby impart a torque onto the stanchion. The aircraft can be configured to operate in a rotorcraft mode in which the boom rotates about a boom longitudinal axis during vertical flight, and wherein the torque imparted onto the stanchion causes rotation of the boom in the rotorcraft mode.

What is claimed is:
