Embodiments of the instant disclosure relate to a radio frequency localization device that determines the position of a radio frequency (“RF”) source of interest includes. The RFLD includes an antenna element, a communications device communicatively coupled to the antenna element, and a control circuit communicatively coupled to the communications device. The control circuit receives a plurality of cardinal RSSI values from each of a plurality of nodes that communicate with each other via a self-organizing local area network (LAN); and determines, using the cardinal RSSI values, the position of the RF source of interest relative to said nodes. Each node connects directly, dynamically, and non-hierarchically with the LAN; includes a second antenna element oriented in each cardinal direction; and captures a RSSI value for each second antenna element to generate one of said cardinal RSSI values that are associated with a RF signal emanating from the RF source of interest.
