A method of using a female external catheter (“FEC”) includes coupling a FEC to a urine drainage system. The FEC can include a body including a cavity communicating with an opening, a back connected to the body opposite the opening, the back including a connector hole aligned with an end portion of the cavity, a connector disposed in the connector hole, the connector including a sump configured to collect urine from the end portion of the cavity, and tubing coupled to the connector. The method further includes positioning the opening in communication with the cavity over a urethral opening of a patient such that the connector hole opens away from the patient and initiating a pump unit of the urine drainage system to draw a vacuum through the opening of the cavity.
