An aerosol provision system comprising a consumable, and an aerosol provision device which is configured to receive the consumable. The aerosol provision device comprises a receptacle for receiving the consumable. Also provided is a cover which is moveable between a first, closed, position in which the cover at least partially covers the receptacle, and a second, open, position in which the cover at least partially exposes the receptacle. A first portion, such as a light source or an aerosol generator, or a sensor, is configured to be controlled in response to there being a determination that the cover has moved to the second position. In this way, the first portion may be operated in response to the cover is determined as having been opened, to save power in the aerosol provision system by not operating the portion beforehand.
