/To investigate the impact of different factors on total compound amount, we carried out a univariate ANOVA analysis. We found that both brightness and size were significantly related to the total amount of compound (Brightness: ANOVA, F1,36= 10.99, p=0.002094; Size: ANOVA, F1,36=14.02, p=0.000632) (Figure 2, Table S2). We found that males with brighter glands have an overall lower total compound amount. These results agree with similar findings about the glands progressing through a pre-secretory (lightest = brightest color) phase, then into an active secretor phase, and finally a dark reddish brown storage phase, at which point males will have accumulated their maximum store of pheromones (Buchmann, unpubl.). We also found that smaller males, measured by their intertegular distance, produce a lower total compound amount. We did not find that wing wear significantly explained variation in compound amount.
